About

“…a better looking or better behaving little craft never footed the ocean under canvas.” – Thomas Fleming Day, 1911 “Across the Atlantic in Sea Bird.”

Irene Agnes, a Sea Bird Yawl.

This website is mostly the story of Irene Agnes, a Sea Bird yawl originally built in the Great Lakes in the 1930s and now on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. After a long time laid up on the hard, “Aggie” is getting back underway, and you can follow her history, restoration, and sailing adventures here.

But Aggie’s story is also the story of the Sea Bird yawl design in general. Created in 1901 as an easy-to-build cruising boat for regular people, the original Sea Bird became famous for its exploits with skipper Thomas Fleming Day, who eventually sailed his across the Atlantic Ocean in 1910. Untold numbers of Sea Bird yawls have been built and sailed all over the world. This website seeks out their stories too.

The crew of Irene Agnes is dedicated to showcasing the qualities of a well-built Sea Bird and promoting this 125-year-old design for both its rich history and as a continuing gateway to big adventures in a small boat.
